How To Connect Your Bluetooth To Your Laptop

Mindy Hamilton
Although connecting your Bluetooth device to your laptop can differ depending on the two devices, brands, and models, there are some basic things you can do to go about connecting the two devices. You should always be sure to pair the devices in a secure environment, especially when it is the first time.

The first thing you need to do is to charge the Bluetooth and your laptop. If the Bluetooth device is new you often have to charge it to even get it to come on. The new Bluetooth headsets are this way and must be charged before using.

Next, you should turn the devices on, and allow them to power up. Powering up the two devices can often start the pairing process automatically, saving you a great deal of trouble.

If the devices don’t auto-pair you should turn the Bluetooth functionality on. It may or may not be turned on when you buy the device. Sometimes on a laptop you will have to go to the control panel or system preferences and turn it on manually.

Some of the Bluetooth devices allow the functionality to be turned off or hidden. You need to be sure they are visible. When you are connecting the two things together, you will want to be sure you have them both visible so they can see each other. When the two items are paired correctly together, you can choose to change the settings so they are hidden if you have security concerns or don’t want others to see them.

When you’ve charged, powered up, and set the appropriate Bluetooth functionality on the devices, both the laptop and the Bluetooth item will need to initiate communication sessions with each other. A connection between the devices will require one of the items to act as the “host” and the other to be the “guest”. The host is one that most of the connection will be setup through. Throughout the process of networking, a device can be used as a host with one device and a guest with another.

When the two items can see each other, you will have to give your passcode into one or both of the devices. Sometimes the passcode is already fixed and comes with the item, assigned by the maker. Other times the user manual will contain the passcode. Sometimes the user is able to set their own passcode. When the correct passcode is entered, the two items can validate each other and the connection will be established.

There are many sites online that will give you a video step-by-step set of directions on this process. You will find that once you’ve done it however, that it is quite easy to do it again.
